The first line of “Sweat” is concise and introduces us to a very specific and important part of the story: the setting. We learn that the protagonist, Delia Jones, is a wash woman and that her husband, Sykes, has disappeared with her horse and cart.

In the middle of sorting clothes, “something long, round, limp and black fell upon [Delia’s] shoulders and slithered to the floor beside her” (3). No, it’s not a snake (her worst fear), but Sykes’s bullwhip. He berates her for bringing ‘white folks’ clothes into the house and tells her to quit working. When she doesn’t, he kicks the clothes around. This guy sounds like a real joy to be around, doesn’t he?

1) States developed independently in very different environmental settings. Environmental factors can be both stimuli or constraints to the development and sustainability of ancient states.
Compare and contrast the relationship of environmental factors to the rise and fall of complex civilizations in at least two civilization areas. How do climate, geography, geology, plant and animal species, agricultural potential, resource abundance or scarcity affect the development and history of states in each region?

2) Empires use a variety of strategies to integrate diverse regions and peoples into an “overarching tribute-taxation structure and an ideological apparatus” (Gailey and Patterson 1987:8).
Compare and contrast the strategies used in the expansion, consolidation and administration of at least two prehistoric empires. How did imperial strategies permit each empire to exert control, extract tribute and avoid resistance? How did the choice of strategies affect the viability and longevity of each imperial system?

3) Ideology may be defined as “the principles, philosophies, ethics and values by which human societies are governed”. Iconography is “the ways in which aspects of the world, the supernatural or human values are conveyed in art” (Flannery and Marcus 1996:351).
Compare and contrast the ideologies of any two ancient states or empires as represented in the iconography of their corporate art and architectural style. What does the content and context of art and architecture tell us about each state society?

  • Consider the ways that the “Preface” to Douglass’s Narrative, written by William Lloyd Garrison, does just that: it puts a “first face” on the text. In what specific ways does he think the book will operate on readers, and their society?
  • Add to your considerations the prefatory “Letter” by Wendell Phillips. Taken together, how do these texts serve to “authorize” Douglass’s text? That is, how do they authorize him to speak, witness to his veracity, and set the terms for reading his book? Discuss.
  • What are the plain facts about Douglass’s birth and early years, and how are such facts significant?
  • Look carefully at Douglass’s prose style in the opening chapters. Using examples, show when (and for what effects) Douglass uses a simple sentence, in contrast with other moments when (once more, for certain effects) he uses a complex sentence.
  • According to Douglass, in what ways, and by what specific means, do slaveholders “dehumanize” their slaves?
  • What does the murder of Demby teach Douglass and, by implication, ourselves as readers?
  • How does it come about that Douglass is sent to Baltimore, to live with the Aulds?

Chapter VI begins the story of Douglass’s quest for literacy.

  • What reasons does he give–or, put another way, what is the logic–for his wanting to learn to read?
  • What specific means does he use, and what texts does he read and study?
  • What significance do we attach to these facts? (For example, what values or themes does he derive from these readings; and what habits of subversion or resistance to slavery does Douglass learn from learning to read and write?)

Discuss, in several well written paragraphs.

If literacy was such an all-empowering thing, Douglass would never have been sent to the self-styled “nigger-breaker,” Covey, by Thomas Auld. This man, “Master Thomas,” apparently only regards Douglass as a slave potentially “spoiled” for the life of a slave by the learning he has surreptitiously acquired.

Is book knowledge enough, then, to overthrow slavery? And if not, what else will be required? Certainly his battle with Covey takes on immense, and central significance with respect to such questions. It is the slave’s decisive step towards freedom. Douglass’s concluding chapters will thus take him from the nadir of his experience as a slave–his awful months with Covey in 1832–into his life as a freed but fugitive slave. The main portion of his narrative concludes, then, with Douglass detailing the first time he rose to publicly speak the facts of his enslavement, in Nantucket, on August 11, 1841. This is the very moment that both Garrison and Phillips describe in the prefatory texts, as their first encounters with Douglass; and as such Douglass’s book has at that moment come full circle. It has narrated his life as a slave, and his self-emancipation, up to the moment that his public life, as America’s greatest anti-slavery advocate, begins.

Yet Douglass also supplies an “Appendix,” which addresses the hypocrisy of slave holding Christians. This chapter sharpens the edge on what might otherwise be read as “mere” autobiography. The book’s sociocultural work begins, as well, with that critique of Christian America.
